new music recommendation from UncleWendy

We went to see Thee More Shallows play at the Bottom of the Hill BBQ show. They were pretty good, minus all the squeaking feedback from the sound system. Not their fault, really. But the lead singer appeared to be a dick on several occasions (unless he was being totally sarcastic and I missed it) yelling at Brian, the guy who was playing some kind of instrument and/or computer housed in a hardshell pink suitcase. I have this pet peeve for performers who have bad stage presence and in the past it has definitely been a deterrent in going to repeat performances (Mike Doughty, Chris Von Schniedern...)

As an unexpected benefit of the show, we discovered a new band called The Ebb and Flow. I was immediately impressed with their unique sound. One part indie rock, one part jam band with lots of additional flavoring, including 3 backup singers in pure '70s garb. (Their mics/sound was effed too, but I still very much appreciated the addition.) Each member of the band was an amazing musician individually, but most impressive was Roshy Kheshti who plays moogs, farfisa (whatever that is), melodica, and vibes sometime all at the same time WHILE SINGING. Hello, I can bearly type this and listen to music at the same time without getting all cross-eyed and punching myself in the head. The show not only got me dancing, but I purchased the CD "Time to Echolocate." The album is great, but it lacks some of the energy and improv of the live show. Another great Bay Area band and another amazing show for only $5!!!

The Ebb and Flow play for free at Amoeba on Wednesday June 29th (6 PM) and the following night at MakeOut Room $6.
