Monster Drawing Rally
Each artist had their own pads, canvas, and piles of papers surrounding them, and they made art with everything from pencils, charcoal, pens to exacto knife cutouts and ink on transparencies.
Some wore headphones to get into their own zone, while others chatted with onlookers. Once the drawings are finished, they're immediately bagged and hung on the walls so that the spectators can purchase them for the set price of $50 each. In my opionion, this is a brilliant fundraising event that could be made more profitable by auctioning off the prints, with a starting price of $50. The proceeds from the event benefit Southern Exposure’s exhibitions and artists in education programs.
As you can see from the photos below, it was pretty fucking crowded.
The list of more than a hundred artist featured all different levels of experience. Lance Jackson was drawing the tightly packed crowd as they paraded past his tables. The figures were all zombies and some were attacking and killing each other. Brilliant! Lance does a lot of work for the SF Chronicle, among other papers. I really like his style, but he was using only pencil in his work that night. While I appreciate the simplicity, I think if there was some color, I probably would have bought one of his drawings.

Kelly Tunstall is a favorite.
As is, of course, Poopy Lickles. I met him at CellSpace a while back at Zine Fest and found him utterly hilarious and disturbed. Him and his office mate would pass little drawings back and forth and come up with some pretty remarkable quotes and speak bubbles. Everyone needs a lil' bathroom humor now n' then. Especially me. His first drawing of the set was a comic-book style female figure. Her shirtlessness has some serious crowd appeal, and the drawing sold after less than 30 seconds on the wall, with more than 5 (male) potential buyers battlin it out.
Here's a close up of the very popular cartoon boobs.
And here are some more pictures of artist who I envy.
What was I thinking when I majored in English??!! DAMMIT.
