Bootcamp Week 4: Attack of the Itis
My knee was raging on Monday, so I called outta work sick, and I spent the day icing, elevating, and working on Burning Man costumes. I got a last minute appt. at hellish Kaiser where my doctor diagnosed me with bursitis. My bursa is/are inflamed. It could be one or it could be all 3. I've decided to nickname my inflamed bursa, Bursa Reynolds.

Bursa Reynolds, no relation
Dr. T pressed his finger deep into the fragile/inflamed spot and dug around, enough to make me quiver. (I wonder if that's what getting kicked in the balls feels like?) Then he gave me a knee brace that looks like a big unsexy sweatsock and a bucket of horsepills that were accompanied by 6 pages of warnings. On Tuesday, I proudly declared the diagnosis at class, and Instructor Ray said that we would do Pilates so that I wouldn't aggravate the injury. Another beginner is also injured, so that's 2/3 of the beginner's group that's unable to run. Turns out, pilates is incredibly hard, especially on the (fl)abs, so the break from running is no cakewalk. I don't recommend Pilates to anyone who hasn't already mastered yoga. Instructor Ray warned us, “You guys are going to hurt tomorrow. And I don’t mean it’s just gonna hurt when you move. It’s going to hurt when you breathe!!!”
Damn.
On Thursday, we slept in for no apparent reason whatsoever. Perhaps it was a message from the subconscious? I don’t remember any alarm. I just remember seeing Vanilla Ice sitting in our computer chair watching us sleep during the night. The boogeyman takes on strange yet powerful forms.
Today was day 15. Should I feel strong and fit on day 15 of 24? I don’t. The consensus for Week 4 is that this is really, really hard. Today was a Killer Keith day and he worked us good n’ plenty. We alternated push ups and squat for 3 sets, then they did running (I did speedwalking) and we continued 3 more sets. Then we did a bunch of lunges, squats, crunches and more walking and my knee started to hurt, so Keith had me stretch instead of lunging. Yes!
Halfway through class we switched to ab exercises and ended with some challenging band/bicep curls. I am really going to feel this tomorrow. My god I cannot wait until tonight when I am sitting in a hot tub staring up at the stars above Lake Tahoe. I’m going to eat an entire jar of peanut butter, because dammit, I deserve it.
