Will the gushing ever end?

I promise to shut up about Costa Rica after this post. It’s just that I can’t stop raving about a place that practices some of the day-to-day practical policies and beliefs that I dreadfully wished existed in the United States. Raa Raa raaa! Damn, I'm getting unAmerican in my old age.

One of the reasons we chose to travel to Costa Rica was the country’s concern for the environment. I was surprised to learn that the government supports environmental protection, since it's painfully opposite here in the States. They are known for their eco-friendly travel industry. Both places we stayed, in San Jose and Puerto Viejo, composts organic garbage to use as fertilizer, uses solar panels to heat water, chooses biodegradable products for cleaning and laundry and special showerheads that reduce water use. In the bathroom in the San Jose hotel, there is a prominently displayed sign that reads:

"Imagine how many tons of towels are unnecessarily laundered every day in all hotels worldwide. You can picture the enormous quantities of waste powder polluting the waters. Would you like to help us start protecting our eroding environment? Please decide. Towels on the floor mean "please change." Towels on the towel rack mean "I will use them once again."

What a clever approach at reminding people to take personal responsibility for the destruction they cause. The coral reefs have been eroding in Costa Rica because of pollution in the water including pollution from cleaning products as well as excess fertilizer from the Dole banana plantations. I was so impressed with their bold stick-it-to-the consumer signage. PLEASE DECIDE.

I would love to see thought-provoking placards dispersed in various places in American culture.

At Starbucks
To our beloved customers: Please take a moment to recognize that this mediocre-tasting beverage contains toxic levels of fat, sugar and a mildly addictive stimulant drug that may cause headaches, trembling, abnormally fast heart rate, irritability, nervousness, attention deficit problems, hyperactivity, anxiety disorders, depression and other adverse effects on those who use it including your teenage daughters. Would you like to join us in stopping the trend of teenagers drinking Mocha Frappuccinos while talking loudly on their cell phones in public?
