this is YOUR country

Just got back from vacation, only to find the country falling apart. Not exactly the type of news you want creeping into your paradise.

Bush was enjoying yet another vacation before and during the beginning of the hurricane. There's a lack of accountability, failure of communication, corrupt appointments in FEMA, slashed budgets for fixing levees, the absence of the National Guard who are off fighting in Iraq, shifting of blame, lack of money, lack of answers...And then Bush sneaks in his nomination for the replacement to the finally dead Chief Justice Rehnquist. What's the rush?

The last time Bush pulled a "no-one is looking" dirty trick, it deeply affected our civil liberties. The same day that the U.S. captured Saddam Hussein, Bush privately signed into law an expansion of the Patriot Act.

Because of this expansion, in YOUR country, federal agents can rifle through your library reading list. They can intimidate journalists and jail them for critisizing the government. Your government can keep you off airplanes without giving you a reason. There's no due process and you will never no why you are on the No Fly watch list. Mistaken identity? Too bad Mike Smith and Jenny Jones! Your government can search your home and not tell you for weeks, months or ever. They can collect information about what you read on the Internet, what you buy, your hotel visits and your medical history. They can take your business and financial records. They can read your email and your instant message chat. Perhaps they are reading my blog, right now?

Just when you think things can't possibly get worse, they do. How is he getting away with all this?

What's hard to believe is that 1/3 of the country still thinks that Bush is doing a good job. I don't actually know any of those people, but they must exist, as they are talked to by pollsters. I mean, are they people who do own telephones, but not televisions?
