as the french say, art in a hotel

Amy from Boston was back in town for a one-night visit, so we took her to what she claims was her first art opening. Could that be? The show was at the Hotel des Arts on Bush St. downtown, a refurbished old timey hotel where cool rock stars like Arcade Fire stay when they’re in town. They chug whiskey and tell their groupies to lick it up, bitch.

The small, simple guest rooms are amazingly adorned in custom urban/street art. And I’m not just talkin’ framed canvas. This stuff is on every wall, floor ceiling, closet and chair of selected guest rooms. While we peered inside, other hotel guests walked down the halls in towels heading back to their rooms from the communal bathrooms.

There was a ton of amazing artwork there, much of it was mixed media, which I suppose should be inspiring to me. Mostly it was just intimidating. There was a whole hallway filled with skateboard decks of Jason Lee, Chris Pastras, and Clint Peterson. Jason Lee is better known these days as Earle from that hideous situation comedy called “My Name is Earle.” I overheard from a passerby that his father is Stan Lee, author of Spiderman comics. This is not true. See so here! However, Stan & Jason both appeared in Mallrats and Jason played a friend of comic nerds in the movie Chasing Amy. Take that, art show liar man!

Start SOMA boasts that “95% of our inventory to date has been priced BELOW $1,000,” which is cheap in the art world. But sadly, it’s still hundreds of dollars out of the question for me. So I’ll continue to frequent their free shows shows and sip their fancy, free cocktails and provide my free services of dispelling myths overheard in the hallways. If you go to any openings at the Hotel Des Arts, make sure to arrive early. The viewing space--shared hallways-- are slender and cramped (it’s a former Victorian boardinghouse) and the events always draw a large crowd known for hogging all the booze. Or YOU can hog all the booze, then stay the night for $89-150.
