Nov. 3, Go omnipresent!
What to do, what to do? If only I could be wicked cool like Jesus and split myself into the Holy Trinity whenever quality rock music downpours on San Francisco.
Tonight, Nov. 3rd, is the night of all nights to be torn between some quality live music. First of all, you have The Magic Numbers are playing at PopScene. What the hell is PopScene, anyway? How can I live in this city for 2 years and still be learning of new venues? I’ve been listening to the self-titled debut album “The Magic Numbers” constantly these past few weeks. It’s really unusual, happy pop music with hints of 70s rock harmonies and banjo, alt country undertones. I’m very addicted.
Then you have Tristeza playing at Bottom of The Hill. It’s really hard to describe instrumental music when you’re not a trained musician. But if I had to sum up their sounds, I’d say relaxing rock, multilayered, dabbling in electronic sounds, but not overly so. Not as ambient as Sigur Ros, but in the same family. People compare them to Mogwai, which I guess works. It’s refreshing to enjoy an instrumental rock album. Something to stare at on iTunes anyway.
And if indie rock bossa nova is your thing, the Mosquitoes are playing at the Make Out Room. I’d probably go to that show if none of the other options existed, seeing as they’re one of those bands that’s making it big via the soundtrack to the O.C. and car commercials. That’s the equivalent to breaking into acting by starring on MTV’s The Real World Season 29. Still, fun music and for the bargain price of 6 boogs.
In the end, the voice of Emily Haines from Metric will produce the coup d’etat in tomorrow night’s fierce competition for my cover charge. I’ve been loving Metric’s "Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?," since my first listen. They’re a bit like Garbage, but more new wave. You know how the Canadians are cleaning up these days. You can count on anyone remotely related to the Broken Social Scene collective. What can I say, I’m a sucker for any songwriter who invents cool words like “Succexxy.”
Okay suckas, turn off your TV and go see some live music! Support independent artists! Survivor will be on next week.
