fuck smalltalk
One of my favorite authors is Jonathan Ames. He writes absurdly funny, unusual, sexually frank books about people he knows and experiences he has, which involve prosthetic vaginas and homeless artists. For about a year, every birthday gift I bought for my friends was his book "What's Not to Love." He, like his writing, is quirky, horny, hilarious, pansexual, lonely, adorable and awkward. He's just the kind of freaky nutjob you fall in love with.
Last year, we went to see him read at a book store on Haight Street. The band One Ring Zero performed songs from their album As Smart As We Are, featuring lyrics written by Jonathan Ames, Jonathan Lethem, Margaret Atwood, Paul Auster, Dave Eggers, and other popular authors.
Unfortunately, I don't live in New York, because Jonathan regularly hosts his own show at Mo Pitki's featuring magicians, writers, comedians, musical acts, and some kind of dance performance. Based on his books, live readings and collaboration with the band One Zero Ring, something tells me that The Jonathan Ames Show is a must see. But alas, I am on the left coast, so I must miss it.
What I'd like most like to see are the interviews Jonathan holds with each performer after their 8 to 10 minute performance. In each interview, he asks his guests to elaborate on their sexuality, their spirituality, their financial state, and whether they are hopeful or despairing about the human condition. This is the kind of interview I want to host with every person I ever meet. Step aside, Barbara Walters. I will make you cry!
How would you describe your sexuality?
Despite what my American fans thought in the 1980's, I'm actually very homosexual. I broke up with Tiffany Brisette to date my boyfriend Kenny Goss, better known as "The Hunk," and we recently got married because gay civil partnerships are legal in the UK. Though, still some American women in their 30s still try to bed me. (Laughs) Pathetic!
Your spirituality?
My song "Faith" was actually written by Linda Perry. God is dead, pass the champagne!
How's your financial state, George?
Last night a giant gob of gooey money fell out of my bum.
Are you hopeful or despairing about the human condition?
Funny you should ask...I'm currently reading "The Human Condition: Contemplation and Transformation" by Thomas Keating. I have been on the mystical path for many years now, and I have encountered many "spiritual teachers" largely through their writings. Only an exceptional few who have captured the mystical vision so clearly and purely have actually had a significant impact on my spiritual life whether as mentors, friends or companions on the path. Fr. Keating is one of them. I'm not done with it though, so I reccomend "Toxic Bachelors" by Danielle Steel.

FYI, he's not married YET! Some of us "pathetic" 31-year-old women still hope he'll shave his facial hair, dye his hair blond, and woo us just like he used to in our minds back when we were 10-year-old Texans with a secret accordian file of Wham! memorabilia. (Like I'm the only one.)
