The Best Sitter award
This is my little friend Jonah. She is the greatest. Last weekend she got the first trophy of her life, a much-anticipated moment. She's been wanting one forever and has even begged her mom to buy other people's trophies that she found at thrift stores. Just before the awards were handed out, she found the box filled with trophies that the coach had tucked into the corner and she was hovering over it, mouth practically watering. The coach saw and hid the box until he could make his speech and award the trophies to each player individually. When it came time for him to give Jonah her trophy, he said, "Well, here's a player that's really great when we can get her to stop sitting on the field during games." Uh, I guess I missed something in the previous games. Ya never really wanna be known for being the teammate that sits during the game, though. I mean, the bench is one thing but sitting on the field? Anyway, I hope she remembers this day, this moment, for the rest of her life.
The most I'm going to remember from that day is the sewing teacher who'd rented out the Rec Center to teacher her class before the soccer party. When we arrived with cake, pizza and a dozen little kids, she flipped out. It was so awesome. She was all, "Who is in charge here!? Who can I speak to! This is RIDICULOUS! I booked this room until 12:15 and you're barging in on me. I'm going to speak to the city!" She yelled "move it!" and pushed all the soccer moms out of her way. She got into her sewing truck and peeled out of there as if we'd broken her best solid platinum sewing needle. I love seeing adults have temper tantrums in front of children. It reminds me that age has nothing to do with maturity.
