granny likes her hip hop
Last night we went to see Finless Brown at Madrone Lounge. What a cool bar! It's not the greatest space for a show because of all the furniture and the narrow shape and lack of stage, but nonetheless Finless put on a great performance and kept this aging granny out past midnight. For some reason, I always have my doubts about live hip-hop. Those doubts were proved false! They were even better live, with magical freestyle and energetic backing band.
Finless is an interesting band, with one male and one female vocalist, turntables, and live funk-ish/jazzy/soul band. The female, Moto, raps in Japanese and sings in both English and Japanese, giving them a unique sound. I wished she sang more last night, but she was more of an accompaniment to "Paulie Rhyme," the other emcee.
I want to say that I'd see them play again, but if it weren't for those meddling kids! The crowd was mostly youngsters, I guess because it was a late on a Wednesday night, and they were pulling out all the stops with overuse of cellphone photography to making out in the front row. One girl was dancing aggressively and thrashing into us, all the while holding her newly purchased CD and promo materials in the air. Huh? "Throw your promo materials up in the air! Now wave them around like you just don't care!" So I tried to stay cool, sipping my cucumber infused vodka, but inside I was starting to boil and feeling that I could have enjoyed it all the more if we were at a larger, 21+ venue with a stage. Finless is a local act, so they should be playing around the city more often. Check em' out!
