eat well and help the punk-ass kids
We subscribe to Eat Well Farm organic delievery service, and I'm very happy with it, but today I discovered Planet Organics. They do basically the same service as Eat Well Farms, but with the added bonus of donating a portion of profits to nonprofit orgs like the one I work at. They are slightly more expensive than Eatwell, because Planet Organics is not a farm. They are a middle man between a farm and consumers. They buy from local growers and do all the coordination and admin, which is why it costs more. Eat Well Farms selects one drop off point per neighborhood, and you pick up your box there. Planet Organics brings your food right to your door, and you can even give them your gate key if you're not going to be around during delivery.
There are so many benefits to joining a community supported agriculture program, but my favorite is having the weekly surprise. Today, my salad has radishes in it. I've never bought radishes before in my life, and they are really quite good. Besides that you support local farms and have a cost-effective assortment of fresh, high quality local fruits & vegetables and other farm products all ready for you. No mussing with the parking lot at Trader Joe's (ugh) or even thinking about what to make for dinner. They provide recipes each week for the food that's included in the order.
If you're interested in trying out the whole organic foods delievery, Planet Organics lets you try out the service without any contract. So although you're not investing in the farm long-term like in traditional community supported agriculture programs, you are still supporting local farms indirectly and avoiding that horribly sculpted earwax that Safeway claims is produce. Ick!
Let me know if you're interested so I can give you details about how your food purchases will help out nonprofits.
