musically speaking

We saw Apostle of Hustle at Cafe du Nord this weekend. We'd caught half of their show back when they opened up for Stars at Bimbo's, and it was enough to whet the appetite. This show wasn't as good, mostly because the crowd had pretty much entirely dissolved by the time they played their third song, and what was left of a crowd was talking through most of the set. Rude! Plus, they have this percussionist, tapdance token diva accessory that is far more entertaining on an elevated stage. At Du Nord, it was more like "who is that girl playing the bag of bells? I could TOTALLY play that." They sounded good, but the energy just wasn't there. The band who played before Apostle of Hustle is called MiniPop and they seemed to draw the majority of fans at the show. We were chatting with Kevin & Vanessa through most of their set, so we only caught the tail end, and yet again we are curious.

Other than Apostle of Hustle, I've been listening to these guys recently:

Neutral Milk Hotel/In the Aeroplane Over the Sea: Lots of powerful vocals, soft crooning or yelling, over simple acoustic strumming, for when you're in the mood for something angry yet simple. I'm a sucker for indie rock that incorporates tamborines and horns, among other kooky instruments. All songs have supreme lyrics, and there's one instrumental song that uses bag pipes to create pure rock (none of that tartan shit).

Mates of State/any & all of their albums--They are a SF male/female duo who sing some amazingly hypnotizing harmonies. I can't describe them to any other band, because their sound is truely unique. For only having two insturments, they create amazingly large sounding songs. They’re not your standard, average run of the mill harmonies either. They sing in rounds and do some criss-crossing vocal gymnastics. Their lyrics are abstract, yet not over-the-top nonsensical. Just abstract enough to keep you guessing what the song’s about, and those are my very favorite songwriters. I've read reviews where people are annoyed with how upbeat their songs are and how busy they sound, but to me that's the charm. Man, they are charming.
