Time-travelling cell phone father
The Verizon "test man" featured in their current advertising campaign creeps me out. First of all, he's everywhere. I see him on billboards on the highway, in the newspaper, in the subway....But that's pretty typical in a saturated advertising market. The real freaky thing is that his face is too familiar. Today, I finally figured out why. He looks a bit too much like my dad in the 60s--a geeky Buddy Holly type. This is a photo of my dad in 1965.
The resemblence in this photo to that Verizon dude is unmistakable. As I stared at the photo for a while today, I had a feeling. Well, I guess I'll just admit it. I know that it actually is my dad featured in the Verizon ads, circa 1965, and that he was sent to the future via a time machine cleverly crafted out of a DeLorean, fueled by banana peels and flux capacitation. And maybe that's why this campaign creeps me out. I am afraid that the 60s version of my father will accidentally get in my path and interfere with my romantic relationship thereby thwarting not only his own existence, but also his chances at harnessing a very powerful lighting bolt that will zap him back into 1965 with his Verizon royalties.
