art opening, downtown

We went to another art show at Hotel des Arts last week, and again I was impressed. There's just no other gallery space in the city quite like this place. It's a 51 room art hotel in the heart of Union Square and they call it "boutique" which is a sorta snobby way to say shabby chic. This opening featured the work of women visual artists and it was a fundraiser for La Casa de las Madres, a nonprofit serving victims of domestic violence.

Passing by other people in the narrow hallways, I overheard a somewhat clueless woman as she was just figuring out that all the hallways feature art, not just the painted guest rooms. She said to her kids, "Oh, look, there's all kinds of art here from street artists." Um, street artist? I think they're called EMERGING artists, lady! Well, it sounded awkward coming from her mouth, but there is something definitely "street" about the art featured here. It's all urban, graffiti-inspired and edgy. They even have a businessman special!
